The Overseer's Room
Radiant Eye Damage

Switch stabs the Gouger and causes it to start bleeding profusely. Tol gets up sheaths his bow, gets his axe and sword out and sinks both weapons deep into the side of the monster. The other Far Fang shoots at Kathra before fleeing down the corridor.

Beyond the noise of the battle I can hear a rumbling coming down the corridor and warn the others that there is something rumbling down the corridor. The Gouger turns and swipes at Tol taking another chunk out of him.

Switch strikes another telling blow of the Gauger, killing it before peering down the corridor to see two Gareb dhur rolling rapidly down the corridor. Gor Liggs and some other Gareb dhur roll in and finish off a beastman in the hammers. I head over to the corner to see if any survive where they had been held prisoner – none do

Lava river Gor liggs says the levels of lava are rising alarmingly and the gate needs to closed off to save the caverns. It is likely that the lava will overflow in the next day and a half. He says we should look for Gord Oro and Gord Runia who are the other two supervisors who hold the remaining keys. He goes onto remind us that each key will individually disarm one of the guardians.

We decide to carry on to the gate chamber via the overseers rooms and send Go Liggs to the Control Room to disarm the other traps ahead of us.

Before departing we search the bodies of the beastmen and find on one of the leaders 6 carved/ moulded platinum discs of portraits of great value, which we give back to Gor liggs.

Kathra also gives Gor liggs the rust potion to throw at the slicer that is patrolling the corridor outside the Control room. We then head off to the overseers room.

As we head off Tol offers to teach Switch some new tactics, primarily focused around staying away from the centre of the battle
As we head down the corridor Switch notices patches of fresh blood which very quickly heads off west at the first opportunity.

5 minutes later we arrive at a door to the Overseers room. Tol listens at the door and Switch checks for a trap; he doesn’t think there is one.
Opening the door we see that the room is dimly lit and quite large in front of us are two contraptions with red glowing eyes. Laser eye defence Strewn around the floor in front of the edifices are several bodies, which look like beastmen. In the walls are abstracts and paintings of various Galeb dhur.
We spend some time studying the defences…In 30 seconds the defences do a full turn, Ozzie studies the defence and works out it s guardian trap which may have a control panel which could slow down the defence. There is at least one dead Galeb dhur lying on the ground. We decide to test the traps by moving Mage Hand through the room on its own, then with a beastman head, nothing happens with the Mage Hand, but with the head the eye tracks the head and then fires a beam of radiant light.
Kathra volunteers to take a hit from the eyes as Tol runs through. Switch reckons they will target anything in a blast area. I will also use the Hag head as a distraction for the other eye.
I put the hags head into the beam which starts lasering the hags head, as Kathra moves through with the key and is not attacked by the defences. Tol runs through the defences and into the sleeping area to find several bodies of badly burned Galeb dhur, he looks for the keys and other stuff, but doesn’t find anything else.

Suddenly the eye swings around and strikes Kathra with a nasty blast.

Tol finally identifies one of the bodies as an overseer, but rising out of it is a ghostly spirit, it opens it mouth, screams mournfully and punches Tol with its ghostly fist, knocking Tol backwards and onto the floor.Gareb dhur wraith There is another noise as some metal doors slide open and out of the curtains come a set of construct teeth, one of which tries to bite Tol but he manages to hit it first putting it off its chomp. The other construct heads out towards us.

Kathra swipes at the machine before fleeing back to the door. Tol looks more closely at the ghost of the overseer which has the key, He also sees a broken knotted cord near the overseers body and shouts that he may have found a key, before getting up and hitting the construct attacking him with his sword.

Memnnon hands the Eye of Illumination to me as I ready my orb masters detonation.

The wraith moves up and pummels Tol again and pushes him away again, Tol yields ground as the Construct moves after him, causing its jaws clang shut on empty space as Tol moves away. The other set of jaws get damaged by a lance of faith, move in to bite me and hold me in a grab. Construct jawsThis forces me to change my plan from using orb masters detonation to remove the large number of wraiths that are rising out of various bodies and moving towards us. I struggle to escape both with physical means and by an arcane teleport, but I fail and the Jaws close tighter. At least I can activate the aura of the eye of illumination, which the wraiths don’t like. Kathra then cleaves the construct, hitting it hard, marking it as her hammer goes through it, her back swing dispatching a wraith with a single blow – it disappears in a cloud of necrotic fire.

Tol meanwhile is gamely getting back up to hit the chompy construct with ackeris and then runs over to where he thinks the key is. Switch leaps through the defences to assist Tol as I am squeezed tighter by the construct, which tries to drag me into the range of the eye defences. As Switch dashes to Tol’s aid the other construct finally catches Tol. Switch shouts at the wraith to distract it – which succeeds as it gestures at Switch causing him to burst into a necrotic fire and slide back towards the range of the eye defences.

Memnnon takes a hit from one of the wraiths and snarls his infernal wrath at which causes it to explode and disappear.
Kathra notes that the eyes haven’t tracked onto her, implying that that the first 5 feet inside the door is safe from the eye beams. As she shouts this information she smacks the construct causing a spurt of oil to spray me. This is enough to enable me to wriggle out of the jaws as Kathra again lands a blow from her hammer on the jaws. These now turn their full attention to her and slipping through her defences grab her in their metal grasp.

We hear a strangled scream from Tol before he passes out from the pain of the jaws chewing on him. AS his body goes limp the Jaws release him to the floor with a thud before turning and going after Switch who has slid around the side of the Wraith and landed a mighty backstab. Switch however suddenly feels like he is in the middle of a furnace and it isn’t safe to go outside of the area he is in…as the Jaws go after him.
Memnnon leans over and touches my arm saying a quiet calming prayer to Halav and heals most of my wounds from the Construct’s nasty teeth, he then smites another Wraith, sending it back to where it belongs.

Gosh. Tol is down, Kathra is in the grip of the Construct, Switch is stuck in the furnace and Memnnon and I are pinned down by the radiant eye defences. Must remember that when we are in rooms with bodies, they will generally get up as either zombies, wraiths or some other form of undead! Always count the number of adversaries we are going to have before entering and area of bodies!!!!

The pounding of hammers
crunch, crunch, crunch

Switch deftly manoeuvres around his adversary and strikes him in the back as he moves further into the room, pursued by the blood caller, who screams loudly, shifts and screams again – a horrible call which affects the minds of Switch and Memnnon, pulling Switch closer to the archers so they can get a better shot at him.

Out of the corner of my eye I see a jaunty pink feather enter the room followed by the double quick twang of a bow string as Tol’stwin strike connects with the damaged demon caller taking it out of the game.
Archer h
One of the Far Fangs moves out of the cloud and shoots a huge wodge of arrows at Kathra, striking her and splintering. The other one moves out of the cloud and fires at Tol and Switch, they both move to dodge the fusillade, although some still hits Tol.
I again reposition the stinking cloud over the archers to prevent them firing, before launching a ray of frost against one of the blood callers.

Kathra’s opponent nips her lightly in the neck, whilst another steps up to bite Bal Goro and rips out a large piece of flesh causing a lot of damage to the rock man.
Kathra cleaves with her hammer hitting both of her opponents, before back swinging and again striking her adversary again. A couple of mighty blows.

Bal Goro sets off on his now trademark skittles roll and knocks a beastman over, thumps his fists down on another and throws it towards the stinking clouds. It quickly recovers and targets Kathra with a gesture, but before it can cause any damage its concentration is disrupted by Tol’s arrows striking it in the chest. The demon eye still manages to emit a loud hyena like laugh which dazes Kathra and calls all his allies closer into the battle. Another of the bloodied beastmen tries to take a lump out of Kathra, before shifting away pulling Kathra towards the roiling green cloud. She resists before entering the cloud. Stinking cloud

Tol twin strikes the big bad beastman with his first shot, but it only takes a light blow in the shoulder, so he turns and tends to Switch’s wound before reloading and again shooting the big beastman, killing it. As it collapses a faint black cloud of essence escapes it and flows into one of the others. A strange thing to happen, it appears to imbue the essence of the leader into this new beastmen.

Switch deftly dodges a barrage or arrows but Memnnon is not so lucky. I reposition the stinking cloud back over the archers and then let loose my orb masters detonation on the remaining beastmen knocking most of them over with the blast, as one of the archers staggers out of the cloud and swipes wildly at Tol missing. The cloud is starting to cause them a lot of pain and agony, but isn’t killing them fast enough as they keep coming back!!

One of the beastmen gets up and charges Ozzie to bite him. Eeek! Another gets up and nips Switch. Kathra is still wandering aimlessly around the battlefield, but manages to get into the zone of consecration and marks the big guy as she clears her head and reinforces her challenge. Bal Goro rolls through the enemy and then knocks over the beastman challenging me and punching it hard. The leader again laughs its hyenas laugh which summons the pack to it before shifting away and throwing a cloud of darkness at Switch, which misses but dazes Switch, who stumbles over to the bad guy and trys to backstab it, but in his stupor fumbles badly, his luck is not with him today..
Tol fast draws Ackeris and then tries a hit and run on his opponent, but misses with the sword blow and is only able to shift a short distance. Across the room a Far Fang fires wildly on his first shot before hitting Kathra with another damaging barrage. The other Far Fang moves back to get a better shot at Tol, connecting on its second shot.
Memnnon intones a prayer and floods the area with a divine light, which weakens the enemy and strengthens the party, he then heals himself.
I move past the prone beastman, as well as moving the cloud back over the archers before launching winged horde which affects two more of them, and I shout at the beastman against Tol, which distracts it enough for Tol to move out of range. But one of the huntmaster beastmen draws its bow and shoots Tol. He is not looking well, there are several arrows and broken hafts protruding from everywhere.
The Gouger stands up and bites savagely, which leaves Bal Goro very badly wounded. Kathra heals herself and makes a passing attack at the one behind her before shifting and hitting another one next to her. Bal Goro flails weakly at his assailant before moving over to next Memnnon.

The leader cackles again, before shifting away from switch, and instructing its troops to get the weak ones. His howl weakens a number of the party and the gouger flails wildly at Bal Goro. Switch shakes off his dazedness and then moves swiftly around the leaders back and stabs deep into it causing blood to spurt out profusely. A beastman bites at me, but I duck out of the way. Tol puts Ackeris away with amazing speed, loads and fires at the leader, his arrow sinking deep into its side.
Another arrow comes whizzing from the far side of the room, which I fend off with my arcane shield, a second arrow is also foiled by the shield. Memnnon lays a hand on Bal Goro, miraculously healing him, before charging the leader, cracking its skull, killing it. Memnnon then dramatically turns and sweeps the room with his mace, searching for a new target for Halav’s wrath.

I am bravely holding my ground, concentrating on keeping my flying cloud of poison going and launching a shroud of flames in a large area around to try and burn away the last of our enemies, as well as trying to fend off the attention of a slavering beastman in front of me…urrgh.

One of the badly injured archers shoots Tol and retreats down the corridor. The arrow takes Tol in the throat and he goes down unconscious.

Bal Goro rolls across the battle field knocking two of the enemy over and then smacking the beastman next to me. Switch takes advantage of this by dashing in and stabbing the prone beastman. The beastman next to me screams its rage as it shifts away and pulls me toward the cloud, I manage to resist before being pulled into the cloud.

Another cloud of arrows flies in, striking Switch, as another Beastman under the cover of the fusillade sneaks in and hits Switch. I flee over behind Bal Goro before moving the cloud over the bad guys. Bal Goro takes out a Huntmaster, breaking its back. Switch ambushes the Gouger which is intent on killing Tol, who is still unconscious, but misses. A sickly beastman charges out of the cloud, with evil intent and scores a telling blow across the side of my head and all around me goes black…….

I open my eyes to find a bloodied and dying beastman slumped across me and a roaring Memnnon standing triumphantly over us both. There is the deadly swish of large arrows in flight, followed by a the sickening thud as they strike deep into our brave ally, Bal Goro , I watch in horror as he gurgles his last breath and goes down for the last time.
Is this the last stand of the heroes of Winterhaven I wonder? I’m badly hurt Bal Goro is dead, Memnnon is still standing, but is bloodied, Switch is looking pretty bashed up as does Kathra, Tol is unconscious…. oh, no he is not. Tol has come around and is reaching for his sword with a determined look on his face. Kathra is charging an archer, swinging wildly – more in the hope to distract it than to connect, Switch sinks his little sword into the Gouger again. Perhaps all is not lost I think dazedly, there appear to be more furry toothy bodies on the ground than when I last looked.

Over behind us the hammers start pounding, causing a deafening sound. Tol swipes at the creatures from the ground. The Far Fang tries to escape Kathra but she connects with her hammer. The other Far Fangs are retreating out the door. Memnnon moves over to the Gouger and smites with a righteous wrath. I drag my sorry carcass off the floor and concentrate on stopping the Far Fang’s escaping to fight another day by sending an angry ray of frost across the floor at the retreating Far Fangs, hitting one and slowing it down enough for Kathra to bull rush it and give it another taste of her hammer, which kills it.

Two left, the hammers are pounding, who started them up? Are there any Galeb Dhur left in the room? Is this fight nearly over?

The Crushing Room battle

Memnnon releases righteous anger3
27th Sviftmont
We all awake early and ready ourselves quickly to head off to the Crushing room. It was a unanimous decision to go and clear out the beastmen and the fiend before going to the control room.
However getting to the crushing room isn’t easy. The most direct way is down a long corridor which provides a clear line for shooting arrows and enabling the enemy to barricade us into the corridor, that we are all reluctant to do so.

Switch scouts forward to see if there is anything he can do but retreats back when he sees a beastman in the room. Bal Goro says there is another way in which goes past the control room and would take about 30 minutes to get to.

A long discussion ensues as to who should go where and how. About 40 minutes later we agree to send Tol and Switch past the control room to the other entrance to sneak in and cause havoc while everyone else charges up the corridor….. Or that’s what I thought we agreed.

We get to the top of the stairs leading to the control room and Switch and Tol sneak off. Half way down the corridor Tol kicks something causing a noise. This is responded to by a sound coming from the other end of the corridor – oh no we’ve been rumbled. I try to conjure a mouse to scuttle down the other way, as the other two sneak as fast as they can around the corner.

As they do so a large metallic creature hove’s around the other corner. Bal Goro says its a Leveller, one of the tunnelling machines. It continues to move towards us. I suddenly realise that it is now a defensive measure and must have been triggered by the sound, as Bal Goro is wondering aloud what it is doing up here and then commenting that it is also used as a last ditch defensive measure to protect the control room.

I am desperately pulling and hissing at my companions to come away from the path of the Leveller and get away from it as they all patiently listen to Bal Goro’s musings!!!

We manage to avoid triggering an attack from the creature as we head back to the crushing room. In the distance the hammers are working again. As we go I wonder about who has triggered the defence and how we go about untriggering it. Have some Gareb Dhur locked themselves in the control room and triggered the defences? Or is there some other more nefarious forces at work. Something to think about for later!

As we come down the corridor we discuss what the plan is, unfortunately it changes so many times that none of us can remember who was supposed to go first! Another great tactical plan out the window then!

However we hear a commotion in the control room, which means Switch and Tol have engaged, Tally ho. Memnnon charges down the corridor with the rest of the party trailing behind. I drop a storm pillar in the front of us to prevent the bad guys from blocking the corridor, as Kathra and Bal Goro surge past and into the room.

Memnnon grunts as one of the large arrows glances off his shoulder, the shooter however catches fire from Memnnon’s infernal wrath, which puts it off its second shot at Switch. A second one leaps down and fires at Kathra hitting her and Bal Goro with a second shot.

Memnnon angrily charges one of the creatures, striking with his mace. I move further down the corridor and drop stinking cloud on the archers at the end of the crushing machine.

The beastly archers are currently firing arrows wildly around the room, obviously providing covering fire as bursting out of the cloud is a taller beastman. Kathra now moves in against the blood caller, the one battling Memnnon. Bal Goro goes rolling across the floor knocking over two of the beastmen like skittles, before moving over to the other blood caller, punching it hard in the mouth, which causes it to fly across the room and land prone. Way to go!

Get an eyeful of this!
What the Demon Eye saw

Whilst the more martial of my colleagues clean their weapons, I prepare myself to delve into the secrets of the Demon Eye Beastman and do an object reading. I prepare myself mentally and sprinkle some residuum over the beastman’s head before grabbing it by the ears and peering into its lifeless eyes.Demon eye head

There is a moment of disjointed vision and then I find myself looking back out of the creature’s eyes across a desolate upland valley high in the mountains, not unlike the black mountains we are now in. So this is where the Beastman have come from. Did they ever leave Traldaria? Or did they just cross the border and settle there?

As I ponder on this, the scene becomes all misty and for a while there is nothing, before the scene changes to a dark smoky night. The scene is filled with Beastmen of all shapes and sizes, sitting around several bonfires of varying sizes. The closest one is the largest and in front of it is a very large beastman with a cloak on. It is holding a conversation with a hag – more than likely Grishenka. They are bargaining or discussing some form of arrangement or partnership. The body language is interesting; the big beastman believes that he is superior to Grishenka, whereas Grishenka knows she is superior to the beastman. There must be over 200 beastmen camping or living here. Interestingly Grishenka appears to be on her own – a good indication of her level of confidence.

Beastmen3The scene changes again to a room somewhere on this level. I can tell because of the metallic walls. It is a large chamber with a couple of shelves and alcoves leading to rooms off it. in the centre of the room are two very large hammers. This must be the crushing room! The scene shows a large beastman – the one negotiating with Grishenka – throwing a Gareb Dhur down onto the ground under the hammers to be crushed. The image is awful. Another thing catches my attention, the cloak the large beastman is wearing isn’t a cloak at all but, …no they can’t be! The cloak is actually large batlike wings. I look closer, the beastman leader is actually a fiend of some kind. What sort I can’t be sure, but a fiend nonetheless. It would appear that there are also around a dozen beastmen in this room.

Again the scene changes to another view of the room, this time to a smaller room where the Demon Eye is pulling a terrified Galeb Dhur out of a holding room. It is difficult to see how many Galeb dhur are in the room, but there is at least one other in there.

I let go of the Demon Eye’s head as the ritual finishes and shake my head to clear it of the foul thoughts and images.

Memnnon and I discuss what sort of fiend might be leading the Beastmen, but don’t come up with much more, other than that some fiends are nasty and can be negotiated with and other fiends are really nasty and can’t be negotiated with.

I take first watch after dinner and all is quiet until the third watch which is Switch’s, when there is an almighty boom boom, boom. The beastmen have started the crusher up again. It is fairly certain that they are crushing Galeb Dhur, which angers all of us; however common sense prevails in charging in there with the state of powers being very low after 4 battles today. the sounds stop 10 minutes later and we go back to sleep.

Tomorrow revenge.

The battle of the impassioned cleric

We search the bodies and find a range of coins, gold, silver electrum, which all amounts to 400 gp. The coins are quite old, I check out the coins for their historical significance and note that some of them are over 200 years old, which is slightly unusual. I’d expect to find a few but not the amount we have found here.

Tol and I discuss the antiquity of the coins as we also recall the beastmen’s language being mainly of demonic origin, but that they had some phrases of traldarian. Their origin is a bit of a mystery. Memnnon says this is the first sighting of beastmen for over 2’000 years. He is shaken and very concerned as to where they have come from also. Memnnon also recalls that the beastmen departed Traldar lands, but not how! The hyenas are more than likely from the desert lands of ylarum to the north.

We cut a Demon Eye’s head off, salt it and put it in the bag of holding, an object reading when we stop for the night is in order

We decide to check out the corridors to see if there is anything down there. Bal Goro says if we go east we’ll find a couple of larders for food, the corridor goes down to some spare rooms for resting in. To the west the corridor continues for about 30 mins before joining near the overseers room, the crushing floor and a route to the control room.

It is agreed to go to the larders, Ozzie picks up the blast patch from up the corridor. Tol takes point and heads off down the corridor. The corridor is dimly lit.

The first door doesn’t have a keyhole in it, Tol notices that there is some blood, an unpleasant odour and rock crystals on the floor. Tol sneaks onto the next door. There is more smashed up food on the floor as he goes down the corridor, and beastman footprints and. A bloody beastman handprint in the south door, Tol goes and listens at the corner. We can see Tol fiddling with the red fireproof coat and then peaking around the corner before coming back to the party and reporting.

Following his summary we go down to the first door and get Bal Goro to open the door, Memnnon and I cover the corridor. The door opens onto a storage room, with a liberal coating of Galeb dhur food. There is a large barrel leaking stuff and some smelly sacks and a troglodyte spiked onto the wall. The room is pleasantly cool which is unusual, there is an arcane power keeping the room cool.

Ozzie looks in the sacks and finds a range of animals, which would be found in the mountains from higher up and a haunch of beastman, which is strange. This implies some form of planning from the beastmen for their travelling, as well as a level of cannibalism. The barrel is some kind of sour alcohol, although I can also detect that unfortunately a very fine whiskey had been added to this gunk. I resist trying it though. Hyenas

We head down to the next room; Memnnon goes to the corner to cover. I cover the corridor we’ve come down.
There is a wail of horror from Bal Goro as we discover a gouged out body of a Galeb dhur and various beastman food here.
We collect some Galeb dhur food, although much has been deliberately destroyed.
Memnnon, who has been covering the corner, notices movement in the dim light and some low hyena noises. There are several things moving around.
The corridor is too long to try anything to distract them so we resolve to sneak down the corridor as far as we can and then charge them.

We sneak, not so quietly down the corridor, but there is no response except for a low growl.
I have my stinking cloud ready at the first sign of trouble…. then the first archer appears. He is quickly engulfed in a green roiling think noxious cloud and begins choking, and I am delighted to hear that there is at least one other creature taking damage in the cloud. Kathra moves down the corridor and sees two hyenas as Tol’s arrows fly past her, one of which hits Kathra’s hammer, the second arrow taking catching the hyena in the throat, killing it instantly.

The remaining hyena leaps at Kathra, but a third arrow from Tol takes it out mid leap. Memnnon has been itching to get into the battle and now he does, charging into the room and finding two more beastmen, with large blood encrusted talons and dried blood around their mouths – Blood Caller Beastmen. Switch moves down to support. Bal Goro rolls in and attacks one of the Blood caller’s with a mighty punch which puts it on the floor prone. It gets up snarling and howling in anger. The second one bounces over to Memnnon opening welts down the side of his neck, Memnnon reacts angrily and the creature is burnt by his infernal wrath. I move up and move the cloud over the blood talon beastman. An archer appears over on the north side, with a smaller lighter bow and fires at Switch, who is lucky as the shot flies over his head. Kathra flinches as the bowman from the cloud appears at the end of the corridor. Tol moves up and lets looses at it after Kathra charges it and lands a crushing blow. She is then bitten hard on the ankles by a hyena as another comes down the other corridor.

Memnnon marks the enemy, but misses with his flaming mace. Switch moves around to flank the one facing Memnnon striking deep into its back, causing it to howl in agony. A howl cut short as Bal Goro rolls and shuts it up with a deadly punch, which kills it.

The other Blood caller staggers out of the cloud, snarling to mark Bal Goro and Memnnon, the evilness emanating causes them pain, it then clenches its fist and shifts three squares before forcing Bal Goro to do the same.

I cast a storm pillar to stop the hyena, sustaining the cloud as I move it over the Blood caller. This also prevents the archer from having line of sight for his next shot – Riadorn would be pleased.

Kathra is being nipped at by the hyena and the beastman archer. Tol moves up the corridor and fires at the hyena and archer coming down the opposite corridor to Kathra, missing the hyena with his first shot which hits the archer, his second shot also misses. Meanwhile Kathra cleaves a mighty blow through both her enemies killing them.

Memnnon moves into the storm pillar and calls down the daunting light of Halav, which is a bit dim and doesn’t affect the remaining archer.

The Blood caller shifts out of the cloud and is smacked by Switch who was waiting for it and with two swift blows weakens it further. It snarls and spits at Switch and then gestures with its claws to drag Bal Goro back into the cloud. I move the cloud away from Bal Goro and back onto the Blood caller, before moving up to get a better view down the corridor. Tol dispatches the hyena and moves down the corridor with Memnnon racing past to cast his lance of faith, but stumbles as he casts the lance. Kathra lobs two hammers into the cloud disappearing, whilst Ozzie looks on in disbelief. Switch moves over to the archer and backstabs the remaining archer. A hiss of dying breath comes from the Blood caller in the cloud. The battle is over.

The party discusses what’s next as blades are cleaned and hammers wiped of pulped flesh. The party sets up a watch and defences and takes a well earned rest. There will still be time to get to the control room in time after a sleep. It is expected that the control room will be occupied by the enemy.

Before settling down for the night Ozzie cast an identify object on one of the Beastmen to determine where they have come from and what they have been doing to get here. (CHRIS DM?)

During his watch Ozzie reflects on the battle tactics, in particular his use of the stinking cloud. There is no doubt that its use controlled the battle field restricting the enemy archers from have a free field of fire, however the positioning of it on two occasions limited Kathra and Switch as to what their options might be. Something to think about.

He also reflects on the feeling that the Eye of Illumination and the Eye of Storms
created about wanting to be together. There has been no noticeable benefit in having them on the same person at the same time, other than in Ozzie’s case in particular it allows him to change the damage type of his powers. The radiant option being particularly useful against the undead.

A pawful of arrows

A pawful of arrows

We head off to the overseers room, it is a 90 min walk along corridors, which is fairly in uneventful, until we reach a north/south cross roads, to the north is a rising room to the control room, south to the dining room, straight on to the crushing room and the overseers room.

The two shortest of the party continue to bicker about statues. As we go past the dining room Bal Goro does a little check but can’t hear anything, Tol notices that there is something sneaking around n the dining room.

A quick whispered confab sees Switch sneaking off down the corridor followed by Tol with bow loaded.

I put down the blast patch to cover our backs as Switch and Tol sneak down the corridor. As we sneak down the corridor behind them I ask Bal Goro about the layout. There are a number of low tables in the room. The room has a corridor running around the outside of the room and corridor.

Inside the beastmen and their pets, which look like hyeanas are searching the room for treasure and things to eat. Two of them have bows and a third is a Demon Eye, with eight hyenas.
The bowmen let loose at Switch, which takes him full in the chest, the second one shifts behind a table and fires a twin strike at Switch and Tol, both of which go wild. Tol returns fire and hits with both arrows.

Memnnon casts shield of faith as the big Demon Eye takes the initiative and vaults the table to smack Switch, but Tol’s already nocked and fired his next volley of arrows causing it to miss narrowly. Switch waves his sword in a panic and shifts out to avoid the back swing of the Demon Eye beastman’s glaive.

Kathra charges into the Demon Eye and brute strikes it, bloodying it and causing it to grunt in pain. Kathra’s back swing misses. Bal Goro moves past the combatants into the room and hits a hyena, splitting it against the wall

I need to even the odds before the enemy take control of the battlefield. I move forward, with Ozzie with fireshroudRiordan’s advice ringing in my ears “remember Ozzie he who controls the battlefield controls the battle” I speak soft arcane words causing my orb to glow a fiery red, as across the dining room there is a loud crump of a detonation that we can all feel thumping in our chests, however for the enemy it is much stronger. The explosion combusts taking out three hyenas and knocking over one of the archers. A satisfying result!

A hyena moves yapping around at Bal Goro, putting him off. The archer at the back draws a bunch of arrows and lets then loose at the party, they may succeeded in hitting Memnnon, as I warp the world’s arcane fabric to avoid the flying shrapnel. The other archer stands up and draws back its bow and fires at Kathra, sinking its barb firmly into her shoulder, before reloading and shooting Bal Goro.

Memnnon moves over to fire at the hyena, but misses, the Demon Eye shifts to a more advantageous position before howling its demonic cry, dazing Kathra, Tol and Switch, who flees down the corridor, Kathra smacks the Demon Eye with her hammer and hits it very hard, as the area around the combatants is engulfed in my fiery shroud. My arcane powers being such that Kathra is unharmed, but the Demon Eye beastman has howled his last, as he writhes in pain and burns to death. Memnnon is having his own fiery party, frazzling a jumping hyena with his infernal wrath.

The archer lets loose with a pawful of arrows which miss Tol, but strike me, opening up old wounds from the last fight. The other one fires at Kathra but misses. Tol, still dazed, slowly raises his bow and lets off two arrows; the first is a ranging shot to help the second fly true.

Memnnon rids the world of another hyena and heals himself. Switch appears around the corner of the corridor and fires his bow at the bloodied archer. It yelps in pain as Kathra moves into the room but she slips in the creature’s blood as she strikes at it. Bal Goro brings it down with his stony fist.

I move up behind the table and fire a wild ray of frost at the remaining archer, but miss, it returns fire at me, striking the table in front of me, before swinging around and firing a deadly shot at Switch which sinks deep into his leg.

Memnnon calls down a brilliant column of burning light searing the creature with righteous fire before a hail of arrows and Kathra’s hammer finish off the remaining archer.

Rumours of Memmnon's death
have been wildy exaggerated

After a brief confab, Ozzie leans around the corner and casts storm pillar down the eastern Storm pillarcorridor, two arrows fly past Ozzie as he ducks back, Kathra moves across the corridor and peers down the corridor, no additional arrows fly out. She sees a barricade in the western corridor, hiding behind it is a hairy dog face reloading its bow. Kathra ducks back and examines the door which has a hole and some indentations which implies that it slides.

Tol moves across to where Kathra is and returns fire catching one of the enemies in the shoulder, causing it to snarl in pain. Bal Goro rolls forward but drops the stone he was intending to hurl. It falls at his feet, as Switch charges through into the room and sees another 7 foot tall vaguely humanoid bestial creature around the corner. Thinking quickly he smacks it with his sword, quite hard, yelling there is more of them. The dog now strikes at Switch with its crude axe, but Switch deftly dodges the blow and shifts around beside the bowman.
Memnnon comes around the corner and casts daunting light, crying out “by Halav it’s the beastmen, they are returned!”

I can tell they are natural creatures, but not like anything I have ever heard of. But they are uncannily like the beastmen of legend, not that clever, but strong and fast.

Another arrow comes down the far corridor frazzling out in the storm pillar. The archer beastmen shifts out of Switch’s range and let’s loose an arrow at him as Tol’s arrows strike, disrupting its shot at Switch.
Kathra comes down the corridor to enter the fray, shouting “this one’s mine!”, but misses her target.
Tol moves back next to me and rattles off a twin strike at the eastern archer, to keep its head down..
Bal Goro rolls through trying to knock over the beastmen, but only suceeds in knocking over the beastly archer and then tries to punch it…. But misses, however this distraction enables Switch to land a mortal blow, bloodying it.

Suddenly the big beastman’s eyes glow red and Switch cries out in fear “where has it gone?” and staggers around in a daze searching for his foe.

We can hear another beastmen running down the corridor.

Memnnon moves into the battle avoiding the strike from the Demon Eye beastman as Kathra’s counter strike, hits home. Memnnon cries out in pain from the waves of pure evil emanating from the Demon Eye. I reinforce the storm pillar to hinder the far away beastman archer.

Another beastman appears in the big room and fires at Switch, missing him. Its arrow shatters and hits Bal Goro and splinters hit the bucket. Bal Goro is badly hurt. Switch shudders from a massive blow to the head. Kathra’s hammer again strikes the wall, again missing the Demon Eye.

Tol’s arrows again ring true hitting two beastmen. Switch’s blind swipes manage to connect with his adversary, but he is still in a daze and as he staggers around stabs Memnnon to our horror.

The Demon Eye again howls it’s rage and fury, the psychic pain of the howl, continues to daze Kathra, Memnnon and Switch. Another beastman Demon Eye in comes in and attacks Memnnon with its glaive.

A crackling web of radiant light starts to glow around Memnnon as he calls upon Halav’s wrath to assist him and then smites Switch but fortunately misses! The evilness of the Demon Eye is affecting my friend’s minds as they turn upon each other, I must do something to focus our minds! So with a loud shout I release my orbmasters detonation, knocking over three of the beastmen and killing one. However the aura of the Demon Eye also affects me, although not as badly as the others. Kathra flails wildly at the Demon Eye but misses and then lashes out at Memnnon, hitting him very hard. Memnnon is not looking well, there is a dazed look on his face, no infernal wrath about him. It is all he can do to keep the consecrated ground going, which is turning red from the Tiefling’s own blood.

Tol fires a twin strike at the far beastman hitting it and then reloads and fires again with a splintering shot bloodying it. Bal Goro rolls through the archer knocking it over and throws a stone, but misses. Switch also misses the Demon Eye and again stabs Memnnon. This time Memnnon slumps to the ground, unconscious with a look of betrayed surprise on his face.

Ozzie lets loose the eye of lightning striking all the bad guys and then speaks horrid whispers into the two Demon Eyes, which causes them great pain and slows them down. The archer gets up and shoots Bal Goro. Kathra lashes out at the Demon Eye killing it with a mighty blow before hitting Memnnon while he is down.

Tol reassigns hunters quarry and shoots the remaining beastly Demon Eye and Bal Goro throws a rock at it as well, causing it to bleed profusely.

The Demon Eye moves toward Switch and it’s baleful glare continues to daze Switch and Memnnon. Memnnon comes around briefly to sustain the consecrated ground, before again falling unconscious.

Ozzie throws his colour orb at the Demon Eye and misses, before moving into the room and can see another beastman n the distance, possibly with a bow. The Demon Eye falls over as an arrow flies down the corridor at me which hits strikes deeply.

Bal Goro takes another arrow in the back. Kathra moves over to the Demon Eye and tide of irons it into the concreted ground, killing it, Switches to his throwing hammer and hurls it at The bloody archer, but it goes flying by its head, as do a pair of arrows from Tol.

There is the thunder of feet from the corridor as another beastman charges down the corridor we have just moved out from. Memnnon heals himself, and gets up, looking a lot better after his little rest! I duck out of the line of fire to heal myself, but I am struggling to stop the flow of blood from the arrow shards.

The archer fires at Memnnon but misses, before ducking out of sight. Kathra moves past Switch and makes a fierce but wide swipe at the archer. Tol moves out of the corridor and twin strikes the enemy, killing one but dropping his second arrow as he tries to fire at the other beastman.

Memnnon yells defiantly at the beastman confronting him, as it moves in to slash at him. The blow connects, and Memnnon retaliates with righteous wrath and a tap from his fiery mace. Another opportunity to throw my colour orb arises, so concentrating hard on creating a sphere of prismatic colours I hurl it at the beast. Success! The orb shimmers through air and connects with the beastman’s nose, dazing it. Then I concentrate on finally staunching my wounds from the arrows. Behind him there is a cry of surprise as a beast man appears and fires at Kathra which bounces off her armour, Kathra charges the archer and smacks it in the chest with her hammer. Tol’s arrow strikes deep into the beastman, causing it to bleed profusely, Bal Goro’s rock lands on the beastman, killing it.

Switch moves out and shoots. I move into the zone of consecration to start getting healed and with an arcane hand wave cause the beastman some mental pain and confusion enabling Kathra to move around behind the beastman, but her shot goes wide. Tol bravely moves to the front and declares the beastman is his quarry, before shooting it.

Bal Goro runs down the corridor and then rolls down the corridor, striking the beastman hard and pushes to around the corner and knocks it prone, with a triumphant yell. Memnnon searches the beastman and finds that their clothing and weaponry is crude but effective.Kathra again moves behind it and mashes its head against the wall, killing it.

Tol scouts around, noting that the floor is very scratched and is obviously a high traffic area.
One of the beastmen has a fine carving of a Galeb dhur, which is worth over a 1000 gp. Switch is a bit upset about it being handed back to Bal Goro. Bal Goro is uncertain as to whose it is. Ozzie suggests that we hold it until we return to the king, anything that isn’t claimed on our return could then remain with the party. This seems to be accepted as a reasonable compromise.
It is agreed that Switch sneaks around the big room and checks that all the doors are locked. The doors are a big waste room for dropping stuff down into the lava. Switch finds a stair case down and a long corridor heading east.

We agree to divide up and have a look in the rubbish room. Ozzie uses Mage hand to time the team’s opening of the door. 3, 2, 1….The room is dimly lit; it is hot from the lava. I can hear the sound of something rushing up very fast from below. I shout to everyone to get out and shut the door, as I fear it is the dragon – we close the door in time to not see the dragon.

Zombies! - Again!

Ozzie and Tol wake up suffering slightly from the effects of being in the caverns. Not quite as refreshed as we would like to be.

We discuss with Gor Liggs what we are trying to do, and outline our aims. Tol outlines that we need to collect the keys to deactivate the guardians and get up to the control room.

Gor Liggs tells us that each key will shut down one of the guardians, but the control room will shut down the other traps. The guardians are roughly man sized constructs. Tol asks if we can get hold of the constructs. Gor Narogg has already gone down to the lower levels to try to get some of the constructs together and bypass the trogs and the beasts upstairs. We are not keen to go down to the lower levels.

We learn that the guardians are programmed to stop people getting into the gate chamber, but they will generally let Galeb dhur past. The gate chamber allows passage between here and the elemental plane of fire. This allows a power conduit which is used to power much of the Galeb dhur. The gate is surrounded by a pool of lava.
We also surmise that Grishenkachanged shape into a Galeb dhur to get through the gate. We also surmise that we need to stop the flow of energy which should also stop the Volvagia.

Gor Liggs goes on to tell us that if you hold the key the guardian will wait for you. The central control room controls the rising rooms and the traps in the final room and the main place where the other overseers will more than likely head to hide.

We now have four Galeb dhur and it is suggested that they scout out for other Galeb dhur which are in hiding. This is agreed although Bal Goro is going to stay with us to assist our passage.
Before our three weaker Galeb dhur depart to find their brothers Gor Liggs warns us that the power coming through the gate is now more random and uncontrolled, which may cause it to shut off completely or explode. A manual power turning off is quite a long process, over a couple of days.

It is agreed that we will meet Gor Liggs in a day at the control room. He and his two colleagues depart to look for more Galeb dhur. a short discussion as to which way we should go is ended by Switch heading off west, with Tolscurrying to catch up, the rest of the party fall in.

5 mins later we pass our exit. 30 mins there is junction to the south
Tol notices small grey worms living in the caverns and takes one as a sample.
Bal Goro taps out a message to his colleagues to see if there are any hiding down here. Nothing comes back.
10 mins later another wide passage heads off to the right. Bal Goro taps out a message – nothing. We push on.
Tol keeps a look out but doesn’t notice any tracks
30 mins later there is an opening to the south, which we take.

The turning goes down to where there a lot of tools being stored and it is recognised as a good way to go. We head south for 10 mins and then west for 15 mins. We head toward the cavern which is dark. The scouts sneak up and listen carefully. Bal Goro believes the place is empty

I cast Mage Hand and light into the hand which is then moved into the area and illuminates it we see nothing, including no tools. I then get the Mage hand to start lighting up the light cubes in the walls. Ozzie senses no magic in the area. Memnnon strides into the area, Tol and Switch sneak in around the walls, Kathra keeps our rear covered. Ozziecalls the Mage hand back and picks up the stone of light for future use.

After a long search we find no tools, but some rust, which suggests the tools have been eaten by rust monsters. A closer inspection shows a pair of rust monster tracks heading out of the cavern back to the main passageway.

Bal Goro taps out and senses another Galeb dhur. Memnnon goes around the corner to find a badly injured Galeb dhur, which has been cut up by trog weapons. Memnnon calms it down, heals it and we give it a flask of the mineral mixture.

We discover that the rust monsters haven’t been here for several hours. We head back to the main passage following the rust monster track.5 mins later we find a passage to the west with the tracks of the rust monsters heading down there. We head straight ahead. 5mins later we get back to the main trail and head west, whilst the young Galeb dhur heads east.

10 mins later there is intermittent lighting and Bal Goro is alarmed to see that there is a red glow ahead, which may be fire or lava. Switch scouts ahead to see what’s up. The corridor ahead opens up, we’d normally expect to see stairs winding around a shaft, but the stairs are gone and in their place a huge chasm of lava and bodies lying around – both troglodytes and Galeb dhur. The gap in the floor is about 50-60 feet across. On the edge, surveying the gap is a Galeb dhur. Kathra suggests that Bal Goro does his tap, he is part way through but there is no reply, although a tremor in the rocks, possibly drowned out the message. We move into position before sending in bal Goro as a decoy. The area is breaking up with fissures of steam coming out.
She turns around and Bal Goro moves into greet her.

Ozzie moves forward and confirms his suspicions that it is Grishenka. He cries out greetings to Grishenka, as she calls back telling him he is a thief. She gestures at the When zombies attackdead bodies which start to rise. Grishenka passes through her female elf form before becoming an insubstantial vapour cloud and drifts across the chasm. I feel that the hag isn’t enjoying the amount of heat.

However we have more pressing matters than wondering about Grishenka’s comfort levels. Zombies have got up and are surrounding us. Tol shoots the closest zombie.

I take out the eye of light and uses its radiant energy to change the damage of my orbmasters burst to hurt the zombies more. There is a dull crump as it goes off, knocking 2 over of them and creating a large zone of radiant energy which cause additional damage to the zombies.
Switch moves over and back stabs the prone zombie which is now bloodied. Memnnon and Kathra both land telling blows.

The zombie next to Memnnon attacks him with a mighty strike which knocks the tiefling prone. Bal Goro does his rolling attack and knocks one of the zombies over and then hits the last zombie, also knocking it over. Which then stands up and does its own rolling attack which I just manage to avoid as Bal Goro shouts at me to watch out.

The zombie on the ground tries to attack Switch and Kathra retaliates hitting so hard that she shatters its skull. I am not so lucky a second time as I am knocked over by another rolling Galeb dhur which smashes Tol to the ground.

Over on the other side we hear Grishenka laughing as she reforms and saunters off down the corridor.

I get up and activate the eye of illumination and then send a stream of arcane whispers flooding into the zombies empty minds, distracting and slowing them down. Switch slips behind a zombie and flails wildly at the zombie trying three times to hit it before landing a mighty blow on the third swipe. Memnnon gets to his feet and issuing a divine challenge, heals himself and then turns undead, sending two zombies over to the edge of the cliff, although one manages to hang on and clamber back up.

One of the zombies gets up and slowly moves back into the fight before falling over again. The jet of steam shoots out and hits it pushing it back towards the cliff. The other can only get up, before Bal Goro tries to knock it over again. Tol twin-strikes with his sword and axe which sinks deep into the side of the zombie. I cause a rend in space as I teleport one of the zombies further away from me and move away to give my allies space to move.

Switch repositions himself for a clear shot at a zombie trog. His aim is true and the death of the zombie climaxes with a fiery explosion. Memnnon moves over to blast the prone zombie with lance of faith as the wall of steam behind him goes off, while Kathra steps between the zombie and Tol, smacking it with a crunching blow, killing it.

The last zombie gets up and runs towards Memnnon, as bal Goro rushes in and pushes it back towards the cliff killing it and causing it to explode in flames. Fortunately Memnnon and Bal Goro both avoid the explosion. The battle is over – phew, it was a quick but very vicious battle – those zombies were stronger than they were when we last met them.

But then the zombie next to Kathra gets back up AGAIN!

It hits Kathra hard knocking her prone, Tol steps over her prone body and swipes with his sword hitting hard. I move over and throw my colour orb which fizzles and fails- so nothing new there – been happening all my life. I hang my head in despair, will I ever make this pesky spell work?
Memnnon calls down daunting piece of nothingness as his spell also fails. Kathra gets up and hits the remaining zombie as bal Goro rolls in and hits it with his rocky fist, taking its head off which sends the head flying over the head of Tol. That’s them done with then.

We then gather the remainder of the bodies and hurl them over the cliff, to prevent Grishenka gathering a further army of undead. Memnnon says a few words entrusting them to the care of the immortals, and then heals the injured members of the party.

The original battle there had been a large battle and then after that the staircase came down. The side corridor leads to a door for the rising room which only goes down. The stairs should be where the chasm is now, as was the rising room. The chasm goes all the way up, which we can actually see the next level.

We wonder for a short time why was Grishenka here? Has the power influx gone wrong or did she have the corpses to use to slow us down?

A quick look at the options to go up to the next level are discussed. We decide to route march back to the other lift and stairs which go up.

The march takes two hours to get back to the other door going up. Kathra checks the stability of the area, confirming it is now stable, but another major hit will be catastrophic. As we go through the big cavern with all the dead trogs I make sure they can’t be raised by using my or masters detonation and burning them all with an arcane fire. Bal Goro notices that Gor Liggs has left notes for any Galeb dhur to rendezvous at the Control room.

90 mins later we get to the stairs and rising rooms to go up. We go up the stairs cautiously looking for any uncertainty. Switch and tol sneak up the stairs to see that there is an abrupt change to iron clad walls and a big iron door with a smaller corridor before it. We carefully check to see if there are any arcane or physical traps in the area. Switch peers around the corner and sees a glint of eyes about 50 feet away drawing its bow and letting loose an arrow at him. Tol shouts a warning, enabling Switch to dodge back in time to avoid 2 arrows whiz zing past him from either side.

The continuing battle of the hula hoops
Blood, blood and more blood
Switch tumbles away from the combat to recover. He finds himself in an area where it is painful to breath; there is something very unpleasant about this place. Inside he sees 7 Galeb dhur crouched here, evidently in pain and guarded only by 1 trog. Switch also reels from the pain that starts throbbing in his head and feels more of his life force draining out of him. As the blood mists his eyes he notices several skulls around the wall.

Meanwhile the battle is still fiercely raging Tol continues to fire volley after volley of arrows with dizzying speed, some hitting and killing the enemy, others flying harmlessly by. I am orchestrating the lightning Cloud to prevent the basilisk from using its gaze attack and I have also thrown up a storm pillar to give the Troglodyte in front of me something to think about. Weirdly it doesn’t but charges through the lightning to attack me, taking a lot of damage – something is driving it on. Hmm could it be the spell that its cleric is casting on it that is speeding it up, healing it and also driving it into some form of battle frenzy?
Memnnon takes a strike from the trog as he moves over to help the groggy Switch, casting beacon of hope which heals Kathra, Switch and me. Kathra then moves in and smacks her enemy hard before activating her dwarven armour and healing herself.
There is mystical a chanting coming from inside the cavern and Kathra’s trog heals itself as the Clerical Trog appears from the corridor.
Tol has his back to the cliff and is valiantly fighting not to get pushed over the cliff, his two fanged strike missing completely as he flails frantically to avoid toppling over the edge.
I reposition the lightning cloud to cover the Clerical Trog and the one Kathra is battling, as Kathra blindly, but very accurately strikes at the trog in the cloud- connecting with a solid smack and pushing it further in.
There is a low earthy cry of pain from the cavern, as the trog comes back out of the cloud to have go at Kathra, but misses. Switch is hit again and is looking very sick. Tol’s trog turns and attacks Bal goro, before shifting beside him. The Clerical trog moves out of the cloud hits me with a thin ray of green stuff, which again weakens me and deals a lot of internal damage.
There is something big coming down the back corridor, Bal goro moves to see what it is. It’s the basilisk! I didn’t think it could move so fast and had expected it to be being struck by lightning in the lightning cloud. The basilisk turns it’s gazes on Bal goro but bal goro laughs in its face before going fixing it with his own flinty glare.
Meanwhile Switch backs tabs his enemy as he desperately tries to survive. What had previously looked liked we were starting to get the upper hand is no longer looking so rosy. Switch is badly beaten up, as is Tol, Kathra is looking better and I’m on the wrong end of a staff’s powers
I release the eye of lightning, but it is rather frail due to my weakened state, but they all hit causing damage, I then move the storm cloud over the wizard and the bloodied trog. Kathra misses with her site and shifts back a bit.
All Tol’s previous wounds are re-opened as he continues to battle his troglydte and catches a glance from the Basalisk, which poisions him. Switch shifts between the trogs and kills the wounded trog, before turning his attention to the trog wizard.
Suddenly the majority of the cavern is lit up with arcane fire as i detonate my orb, causing the Trog wizard to leap between Switch and I before falling prone to the ground. It flails vainly at Switch with its quarter staff as it gets up but misses.
Memnnon meanwhile has gone to the rescue of the trapped Galebdhur in the cavern of pain, where is charged by the guard, which perishes instantly under Memnnon’s infernal wrath, which is incensed as he discovers the blasphemy and evil powers holding and killing the Galeb dhur here. He immediately sets about the skulls and sigils adorning the walls to break the curse that guards the area and free the remaining Galeb dhur
There is a thunder behind me as the basalisk’s thunders over and bites the bal goro, who is now grievously wounded. Bal goro slams into the basilisk but to no avail before rolling out of the way. Tol, having dispatched his last adversary turns his attention fully to the basilisk, assigns it as his hunters quarry and dispatches it with a single arrow through one of its evil green eyes. Hurrah, things are now turning back in our favour… Can we hold out?
Switch sneak attacks the wizard, stabbing it and bloodying the Clerical Trog, which then shifts out of the way and points its staff at me. I take the full force of the strike and am now feeling very sick, there is blood running from my ears and mouth, I am struggling to breath in my weakened state, another blow may finish me off. But my agony is not over yet – the Clerical Trog sensing that he may yet win this contest, shifts away from Switch’s dancing blade and again levels his staff at me, firing another of his deadly green beams. I am again unable to avoid it and take the hit full in the chest, the foul poison burning my skin and bones, I scream in agony and slump to the ground barely alive.
However that is the last thing the Trog Cleric sees as Switch finally connects and drives his sword up to its hilt in the creatures belly and Bal Goro rolls in from the other side and lands a mighty stoney punch. The Clerical Trog breaths his last.
I stagger slowly to my feet helped by Switch.
The battle is over. The floor is awash with red and green pools of blood. Memnnon feels the weight of guilt at not being able to save more of the Galeb dhur during the battle, only two survive. Memnnon tried to heal them but wasn’t successful . We give them some of the food we have and liquid we have which rallies them. We discover we have found Gor liggs who is one of the supervisors, who thanks us for our assistance. Ozzie asks for the key which gor liggs asks what we want it for. We explain and he gives us the key. It is very slightly magical. Gor liggs suggests that this is a safe place and that there are unlikely to be anymore trogs. We set up a defensive position and search the bodies and the area.

I am keen to take the baslisk’s remaining eye but feel that carrying it will have a longer term dehabiliating effect. I need to have a think of how it can be carried out without being a burden, as it would surely be a valuable asset for an alchemist.
As we search around we find an ornate puzzle box. Switch checks for traps and declares that it isn’t checked and it’s not magical. It’s finally made and appears to valuable 100 gps, inside there is a face staring out at switch…. No its a mask. Which is finely made of yellow and white gold. Ozzie isn’t aware of any human style. It is more than likely a Galeb dhur work. Worth a 1000 gp.

We set guards and go to sleep.

Big Green eyes in the darkness

Kathra falls off the wall as the party climbs up the wall. We had seen shapes slinking away through the upper caverns and go off in pursuit after a short rest. Bal goro tells us that the corridor on the ground was the main corridor.

Bal goro does his tapping to see if he can locate anything, but is interrupted by a shout from Ozzie who had been lighting up the lights around the side of the cavern. As I peer down the south corridor I spy in a very narrow gap, where there is a troglodyte hiding in the corridor. I cast storm pillar and duck out of the way. There is a snarl from further down the corridor and a yell from Tol as he is bitten by an unarmed troglodyte. Balgoro throws a rock at the trog, causing it to leap forward closer Tol, who had shifted back out of the way of the beast’s jaws. Kathra moves to guard the other cavern entrance and spots another troglodyte, which she throws her hammer at, missing. A yelp comes from down near the storm pillar as a trog takes damage. Memnnon charges in and smacks a trog, killing it with one blow, whilst tol steps back and fires a short range twin strike at his adversary, both sinking deep into the creature’s flesh. Switch carries out a sneak attack on the it, whilst my winged horde drives the trog back and causes it to flail wildly at imaginary foes, before swinging at Memnnon , missing as it dodges one of Tol’s arrows. It is then flattened by bah goro as he rolls past and tries to smash it. Kathra takes on the troglodyte which has dropped it’s javelin, as it retreats into the darkness. My storm pillar is still striking out and holding up the enemy from taking us on across three fronts.

Kathra meanwhile faces a new trog…and also notices two green eyes of a large creature in the darkness. Big Green Eyed Monster -sort of! The creature attacks Kathra and Switch with it’s glare. Kathra withstands the stare, but Switch reels from seeing the eyes and is poisoned.

Outside, Memnnon smites the prone troglodyte and then comes over to support Ozzie as tol pumps another troglodyte full of arrows, causing it to start bleeding profusely . Tol then moves over and pulls the rope up.

Switch is leaking poison, hurting Kathra and the trog he is fighting. However he is still in the fight, one of his backstabs successfully moves the odds in our favour with another kill.
Having seen the attack on Switch I recall that there are many Creatures living in the under dark which have a poison attack by spitting or even glance attack – we must be careful. I also suspect that they may have some level of immunity to poison.

I use my Mage hand to get the eye of storms out and call to Kathra to get the magic mirror shard out of the bag of holding, we need to neutralise the glance attack and possibly even reflect it back against our protagonist. Kathra’s reply is ‘busy, busy, busy’ as she fends off the slashing attack of her adversary.
Bah goro smacks the trog and then tries to run it over again, while Kathra charges into the cavern of green eyes and smacks another troglodyte, hurting it badly. Kathra’s trog lamps her one sharply in the side cracking her in the ribs, whilst trying to bite her as well, which also hits. Kathra is bleeding profusely, as another 2 trogs run out of the dark to attack her. She is also hit by the green eyed serpent and is lolling around as she continues to take damage. This is not good.

My cry of medic sends Memnnon rushing in to cast healing word on Kathra, which steadies her. Mem then launches lance of faith at one of the trogs, killing it.
There is a muttering from inside the cavern and switch and Kathra feel a tingling, which makes the troglodytes move faster.

Meanwhile Tol’s never ending barrage of arrows is still taking out trogs as Switch rolls into the cavern of green eye and strikes the big trog, managing to kill it. He then bravely leaps forward and tumbles past Kathra to end up between two foes. His short blade moves with dazzling speed wounding the large trog before slitting the throat of the smaller enemy. That beast collapses gurgling blood.

I head towards the entrance to the darkened cavern where Kathra and switch are battling, using the eye of storms to light the cavern I cast stinking cloud, recognising that the basilisk and the troglodytes are most likely resistant to poison I use the eye of lightning to change the cloud into a lightning storm in the cave. I then try and twist space around the Mage to teleport it into the cloud but fail. Bah goro throws some rocks.

Kathra kills another trog whilst tol’s trog moves in swipes and bites at him dangerously. Out of the side cavern the trog which was behind the cloud appears and launches its javelin, just missing Switch.Basalisk The beast meanwhile reappears out of the cloud and tries to bite Switch but he nimbly steps aside, avoiding the blow. I am hit by a thin beam of green light poisoning and weakening me. At the same time there is an fizz of arcane/natural energy which again boosts and energises the trogs, speeding them up.

Switch’s stab sinks deep into the basilisk’s side, grievously wounding it. I move the cloud to stop the trog wizard casting through it’s gap, before turning and casting a storm pillar to cover Tol, who has been taking a bit of a pounding from his adversary. At the same time Bal goro rolls over to attack Tol’s trog.

Switch is attacked from behind by the troglodyte who bites him in the back of the neck. Outside the cavern, another troglodyte appears from the corridor to threaten me, whilst the basilisk moves out of the cloud and it’s gaze strengthens the poison which is still coursing through Switch’s veins but missing Kathra whilst hitting the other trog. Memnnon bravely heads into strike the trog but misses and then heals Switch.
This battle is not over yet!!
